Fat Lip

Fat Lip: Art, Performance, Protest, saw Kat line the walls of the small basement nightclub with photocopied news pages of the time featuring empowering headlines and protest images. Curated contemporary artworks – by artists met through clubs, parties and warehouse living – were then prominently displayed with gaffer tape around and on top of this collage of media. A projected series of video works featuring themes of nightlife, fun, performance and cultural landscape filled the far wall, lighting the room and emphasising the connection between creativity, joy and political power. Interactive drag performances featuring themes of political agency, satire and the Hokey Cokey took place in the space throughout the night.

The street-facing club window installation featured a large oil painting by Kat of clubbers in full regalia, inspired by the artists featured, stepping out of a trench together in protest into a surreal no-mans-land outside parliament. Political messages depicted included, ‘Gays for Muslims’ and ‘Vote IN’ (remain in the EU). The rest of the window was plastered in flyers for the exhibition club night.
